Communication, it’s at the heart of everything we do.  Every conversation we have, a smile across a room or the way we listen, it’s about being there for that person, at that time.  It really doesn’t matter if it’s the mail man, your doctor, the boss or your peers; the most important thing is communication.

People always talk of the need for it, be it with a partner, your children or with your colleagues. Companies are always looking to impress upon us their ability to communicate clearly with both their staff and customers.  Yet we’re all left feeling frustrated by the lack of clear direction, never really knowing where we stand, and the inability to get our views, ideas and dreams across, due to no clear paths to senior management, or doors that remain metaphorically closed in an open door world.

We’re surrounded by more technology than we’ve ever had, multiple email addresses, instant messaging, smart phones, tablets, video chat, social networking, texts. It’s almost endless.  All of these things are meant to make life easier, to give us more time to spend with loved ones, to bring us closer together. Yet all we feel is more rushed, lacking time and being unfulfilled with our interactions.

So why is it then, with a multitude of ways to communicate, do we feel so unsatisfied with our relationships, both at home and at work?  Why can’t we talk more, be clearer in what we say, get our point across?  Are we losing the ability, in this age of communication, to actually communicate, to be heard and to listen?
